[A moment later, there's a knock on the door of Reiner's rover. Fiona's got some asprin from the med tent and some hot coffee, and a weird snowman doppleganger following her. At the moment, it's standing right next to her, imitating her posture.]
[While waiting for Reiner to open the door, she pours some coffee on it, melting off its elbow.]
[He gets up with some effort, wincing ever so slightly as the blood rushes about in his brain. He'll open the door, stops, and frowns at the snowman. It looks... eerily human. He doesn't like it.]
Hey. [He's pinching the bridge of his nose, trying to stop the throbbing. Despite that, he's more cheerful than he's been in... well. A long while.]
[Well, that's a good sign at least. You can be as sad and upset as you want on the inside, but you better be able to smile for other people. It gives Fiona a little bit of faith that Reiner has that down, at least. She's not going to break it for him by pointing it out.]
[She steps inside the rover and hands him his aspirin.] Here, take 'em with a glass of water. And drink this. [She hands him the coffee.] Coffee's good for headaches. [And staying cheerful.]
[The pills get a suspicious look, but he takes them and, after a bit of fumbling, finds one of the water canteens. He'll swallow them down, setting the canteen aside to accept that coffee.]
I thought coffee just kept you awake. [Is there anything this stuff can't do?]
Yeah, it does that, too. And stunts your growth. [She looks over at
him from her stance at five-foot-eight.] But you'll be fine. You
put the wet towel over your eyes?
Jesus. Sit down. [She pushes him around with a distinctly maternal air, annoyance feigned to mask concern.] I'm no doctor. I just got training from some of the ones here. And five kids at home means I know my way around a headache or two. You think they got thermometers around here?
[His skin is hot. Far hotter than a normal person's skin. His eyes are bright and clear, though, and Reiner doesn't seem to be aware there's an issue.]
Christ. You know if we were in Chicago I'd call the fucking hospital on that fever, right? [But Fiona's not totally stupid. She remembers the steam rising off the monster he became, the aliens living all around them, the oddity and the horror.] If it gets worse, or you feel sick, you gotta promise to tell someone from medical, okay? Me, or Anders or Adrien?
[In one of those little absurd moments that file themselves away in one's mind, it occurs to Fiona that she's the only one of the three of them whose name doesn't start with A.]
