[The pills get a suspicious look, but he takes them and, after a bit of fumbling, finds one of the water canteens. He'll swallow them down, setting the canteen aside to accept that coffee.]
I thought coffee just kept you awake. [Is there anything this stuff can't do?]
Yeah, it does that, too. And stunts your growth. [She looks over at
him from her stance at five-foot-eight.] But you'll be fine. You
put the wet towel over your eyes?
Jesus. Sit down. [She pushes him around with a distinctly maternal air, annoyance feigned to mask concern.] I'm no doctor. I just got training from some of the ones here. And five kids at home means I know my way around a headache or two. You think they got thermometers around here?
[His skin is hot. Far hotter than a normal person's skin. His eyes are bright and clear, though, and Reiner doesn't seem to be aware there's an issue.]
Christ. You know if we were in Chicago I'd call the fucking hospital on that fever, right? [But Fiona's not totally stupid. She remembers the steam rising off the monster he became, the aliens living all around them, the oddity and the horror.] If it gets worse, or you feel sick, you gotta promise to tell someone from medical, okay? Me, or Anders or Adrien?
[In one of those little absurd moments that file themselves away in one's mind, it occurs to Fiona that she's the only one of the three of them whose name doesn't start with A.]
Yeah. More of a city. [Fiona reaches out and ruffles his hair. It's weird, to feel how hot he is, but maybe the nanites in his system will handle it? God, she hopes so.] Aw, what kinda doctor-in-training'd I be if I didn't check up on you? You call me-- or somebody-- if you start feeling worse, okay?
Yeah, okay. [It's weird, knowing there's someone out there who worries about him. It almost reminds him of... a few people, who aren't here any more. That immediately makes him a little somber.]
